Martvili is a small town in the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region of western Georgia. Its monastery was the spiritual center of Samegrelo during the Middle Ages. Under Soviet rule, from 1936 to 1990, the town was called Gegechkori, named after the Old Bolshevik Sasha Gegechkori.
