Svaneti is a historic region in northwestern Georgia, bordering Russia. It is located in the southern Greater Caucasus and is characterized by snow-covered peaks and deep gorges. The medieval villages of Upper Svaneti are dotted with koshki, stone defense towers built from the 9th century onward. The village of Chazhashi in the Ushguli region in eastern Svaneti features many of these towers.
